Welcoming a new baby is one of the most emotional, fleeting seasons of life and choosing how to document it matters.
One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is:
“What is the difference between a lifestyle newborn session and a posed newborn session?”
Both are beautiful.
Both capture your baby’s tiny details.
But they feel and look very different.
Here’s a simple guide to help you decide which style fits your family best.
LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSIONS
My lifestyle newborn sessions focus on connection, emotion, and real moments. These sessions take place in my studio, designed to feel warm and comfortable for new families, but can also be done in the comfort of your own home if you prefer an in-home session.
Rather than posed setups, I gently document your baby as they naturally are, in your arms, in a bassinet, cuddled up, surrounded by the people who love them most.
These sessions are relaxed and storytelling-driven. You don’t need to worry about baby sleeping deeply or being perfectly calm. Feeding breaks, fussy moments, and extra cuddles are all part of the story, and often becomes the memories you cherish most.
What lifestyle sessions look like:
• Natural, candid moments
• Minimal posing of baby
• Family-focused images
• Simple outfits and minimal props
• Movement, snuggles, and real connection
Perfect for families who:
✔ Want a natural, documentary feel
✔ Prefer images with parents and siblings
✔ Love cozy, emotional photos
✔ Don’t want heavy posing or props
✔ May be photographing an older newborn (3–8 weeks)
POSED NEWBORN SESSIONS
My posed newborn sessions create the classic, sleepy baby portraits many families love, where baby is gently wrapped, curled up and carefully positioned in beautiful setups.
These sessions take place in my studio, where lighting, temperature, and posing tools are thoughtfully prepared to keep your baby warm, comfortable and safe throughout the session. Every pose is done slowly and gently, following baby's cues.
Because these poses rely on baby being deeply sleepy and flexible, posed sessions are typically scheduled within the first 2–3 weeks after birth.
What posed sessions look like:
• Baby deeply asleep
• Carefully styled setups
• Wrapped and posed positions
• Use of props, blankets, baskets, or backdrops
• While posed newborn sessions are centered on baby,
family + siblings are always welcome. Family will be captured in the lifestyle area of my studio
Perfect for families who:
✔ Love polished, artistic portraits
✔ Want detailed images of baby alone
✔ Enjoy styled sets and props
✔ Want the classic newborn look
✔ Are comfortable scheduling early

WHICH ONE IS BETTER?

There isn’t a “better” option...
only what feels right for you.

MY PERSONAL APPROACH

As a mom myself, I know how overwhelming those early days can be. My goal is always to create a calm, baby-led experience. Whether that means gently guiding poses or documenting natural moments as they unfold.
If you’re unsure which session is right for you, I’m always happy to help you decide based on your vision, comfort level, and baby’s age.

WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK?

Newborn sessions should be reserved during pregnancy to guarantee availability. I have a blog for exactly when to book here!
If you’re expecting and thinking about documenting those first days, I’d love to chat and plan something meaningful for your family.
